Foliate bowl (Johanna kiln, glaze chamber), 1995, stoneware with navy-bean straw ash glaze, 5 7/8 in. high. Bresnahan #103.

Streaks of shimmering blue cascade toward the inside bottom of this elegant bowl. Bresnahan creates this subtle glaze by mixing navy-bean straw ash, from his family's farm in Casselton, North Dakota, with feldspar and clay. Photograph by Gary Mortensen.
